The End of VHS in 2008
- DVD Video Discs are still strong in the Retail Market
- High Def Discs (Blueray) arent that popular.
History:-
VHS was invented by JVC and then Sony released Betamax (better but VHS won).
Then VHS VCR's ended up using licensed Sony Techonology in the VCR's to make
VHS tapes and VHS VCR's better
Apprently there "Digital-VHS"(D-VHS), (never took off thou)
records digital high definition video onto a VHS form factor tape.
D-VHS can record up to 4 hours of ATSC Digital Television in 720p or 1080i
formats using the fastest record mode (equivalent to VHS-SP), and
up to 40 hours of standard definition video at slower speeds .
DVD format - The DVD-Video format was introduced first, in
1996 in Japan,
1997 in USA
1998 in Euro
1999 in Australia.
Media Retail Company's still don't get the picture .
People didn't start buying VCR's in huge numbers till they got cheap
People didn't start buying DVD Players in huge numbers till they got cheap
People didn't start buying Movies on VHS in huge numbers till they got cheap
People didn't start buying Movies on DVD in huge numbers till they got cheap
People started buying more DVD's in value packs since they are cheap
People are slow to migrate to new techonology , if the current thing works
with your tv/screen , quality is fine , why move .
If it needs a whole new screen people arn't that to happy about it
Compression changing on computers also .
Mpeg 1 was used a lot in Video CD's and Mpeg 2 was used in Video CD's
and Mpeg 2 was used in DVD Video Disc's .
(Mpeg 2 used in the first blueray discs also before protection added)
AVI 700meg instead of VHS/DVD video disc
Early 1998-2002 I started to see a lot of Divx 3.11 movies
(Ohh look at that its the time DVD was released overseas and not AU)
Divx 3.11 was a FREE Codec hacked from an microsoft one (DIFFERENT FROM DIVX 5/6/7)
Then around 2002-2003 , XVID became the standard in compression and Divx 3.11 was getting phased out.
Today XviD supports movies from VHS Tape , DVD Video Discs , TV SD , TV HD , TV High def 720.
If you want to see a lot of media released in XVID AVI format , then view the following websites
